European Media Literacy Week 2019

The European Media Literacy Week is a new initiative by the European Commission to underline the societal importance of media literacy and promote media literacy initiatives and projects across the EU. From 18 to 22 March 2019, various events around the topic of media literacy took place in Brussels and in Member States.

A high level of media literacy is a key factor to enable citizens to make informed decisions in the digital age. In this light, media literacy is a pre-requisite for a vibrant, modern democracy and an important topic in view of the upcoming European elections in May 2019.

The goal of the European Media Literacy Week is to raise awareness of the importance of media literacy across the EU and to highlight different existing initiatives, in particular those at regional and national level. At EU level, the main event was a high-level conference hosted by the Commissioner for Digital Economy and Society, Mariya Gabriel.

Further events organised at EU level include meetings and workshops of the European Commission’s Media Literacy Expert Group, the European Regulators Group for Audiovisual Media Services (ERGA) and the Contact Committee of the Audiovisual Media Services Directive.

High-level conference of the European Media Literacy Week

On 19 March 2019 the high-level conference was held in Brussels at Cinéma Palace.

It was the main public event at EU level during the European Media Literacy Week. Hosted by the Commissioner for Digital Economy and Society, Mariya Gabriel, the event brought together experts from the public and private sector from across the EU to debate the topic. Participants discussed the role of public authorities and different stakeholders in promoting media literacy. Moreover, best practices in media literary across the EU were presented. In addition, panellists exchanged on innovation in the media sector and the role of quality media content.

Media Literacy Awards

In the context of the European Media Literacy Week, the European Commission opened a call for applications for inspiring and/or impactful projects in the field of media literacy. Ten best applicants were invited to Brussels to compete for three Media Literacy Awards during the high-level conference.

The winners of the European Media Literacy Awards 2019:

  • Award for the most innovative media literacy project: Media mashup;
  • Award for the most educative media literacy project: HTML heroes;
  • Award for the media literacy project with the greatest European potential: Media mistakes.
