The deployment of Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) infrastructures and the broader quantum communication technological developments across Europe supported by the European Union under the EuroQCI and other EU programmes, as well as by national initiatives, place Europe at the forefront of quantum communications infrastructure implementation.

Despite this progress, several challenges remain to be addressed before QKD and quantum communication deployments can fully achieve the EuroQCI declaration’s objective of a certified secure end-to-end European quantum communication infrastructure. The next steps are therefore both critical and complex, requiring targeted efforts to tackle the current bottlenecks and gaps in a realistic and actionable way.

To support this process and gather as much technical input as possible, the EuroQCI team at the European Commission has launched a dedicated open consultation. The feedback received will help shape future EuroQCI activities to be supported from 2027 onwards.
