The purpose of the project is to provide equitable, diverse and high-quality education across all backgrounds and regions.

To achieve this, the project will deploy a 5G non-standalone (NSA)/standalone (SA) hybrid mobile private network (MPN) in Naples and Matera, Italy.

What will it provide?

The project will enable inclusion in socio-economically and geographically challenging areas through digital education, in Naples and Matera, two Italian cities with contrasting issues related to social, economic and logistical contexts. By facilitating collaboration between these two cities, the project aims to foster inclusiveness among the young generation.

How will it work?

The project’s 5G NSA/SA hybrid MPN will enable the implementation of six use cases:

  1. Smart agriculture learning hub - The network will create a connected garden leveraging internet of things (IoT), 5G and artificial intelligence (AI) technologies to train local youth in smart agriculture. This approach enhances agricultural education while fostering a community dedicated to innovative and sustainable farming practices.
  2. Health training centre - The network will leverage 5G and extended reality (XR) to provide immersive neurosurgical training, significantly enhancing medical education and remote training capabilities. The platform supports surgical planning, navigation, training and teaching, with a particular emphasis on neurosurgery.
  3. Immersive education - The network will foster interactive and engaging learning experiences accessible from multiple devices, powered by advanced mixed-reality tools. This approach supports classroom, remote and independent learning, allowing teachers to assess students through immersive and interactive tools.
  4. Interactive didactics - The network will use AI-enhanced algorithms to create real-time, adaptive educational content, integrating gamification and behavioural analysis to personalise learning paths.
  5. LV8 digital skill certificate - The network will gamify digital skill development, making it more engaging and accessible for young learners.
  6. Phygital classroom and robotics 4 learning - The network will integrate robotics, coding and 5G connectivity to enhance science, technology, engineering and mathematics education and professional training opportunities. The initiative employs robotic arms and gamification models to engage young learners in science, technology, engineering, coding and robotics.

How will it be built?

The project will deploy a 5G NSA/SA hybrid MPN. The management will be overseen by Vodafone, combining licensed and dedicated private spectrum, to strategically cover sites in both cities:

  • Naples: Fabbrica Italiana per l’Innovazione, Federico II University (medicine and surgery), Scampia area, and FOQUS Foundation in the Spanish quarter;
  • Matera: Casa delle Tecnologie Emergenti and Palazzo del Casale in the Sassi area.

The infrastructure includes macro and small cell base stations, XR headsets, IoT sensors, robotics, smart cameras and multi-access edge computing nodes.
