The 5G Northern European Transport Corridors (5G NETC) project is deploying dedicated 5G infrastructure across key highways and railway corridors in Northern Europe. Co-funded by the Connecting Europe Facility Digital programme, the initiative focuses on segments of the Scandinavian–Mediterranean and North Sea-Baltic corridors within the EU’s Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T).

Designed to improve service continuity for existing users while enabling new public 5G services, 5G NETC addresses one of the major challenges in cross-border mobility: network handover. As explained by project coordinator Mats Mudigonda Lundbäck, disruptions of several minutes can currently occur when transitioning between national networks. 5G NETC aims to reduce these interruptions to near-zero, creating the foundation for connected, cooperative and automated mobility (CCAM) across borders.

The project supports advanced use cases such as connected ambulances, remotely operated vehicles, and next-generation rail communication (FRMCS). Vehicles will be able to interact in real time with infrastructure, control centres, and even other vehicles. This multinational partnership marks a key step toward inclusive, data-driven mobility systems that prioritise safety, reduce congestion, and lower environmental impact.
