5G SEAGUL: delivering uninterrupted 5G mobility across the Greece-Bulgaria corridor

5G SEAGUL deploys uninterrupted 5G coverage along a major EU corridor, enabling safer, smarter transport across the Greece-Bulgaria border.

Funded under the Connecting Europe Facility Digital programme, the 5G SEAGUL project is deploying uninterrupted 5G connectivity across 473 km of the Orient/East-Med (OEM) TEN-T corridor, which spans from Sofia through the Kulata-Promachonas border crossing to Thessaloniki and Athens.

By ensuring seamless handovers between networks, 5G SEAGUL supports advanced Connected and Automated Mobility (CAM) services, and enables uninterrupted voice and video calls, and real-time data sharing for traffic alerts and situational awareness. 5G SEAGUL also enables intelligent freight logistics by transmitting road, driver, vehicle and cargo data for optimised transport operations.

5G and Connected Automated Mobility are expected to transform the end-user experience on the road. Significant reductions in vehicular accidents, shorter commute times through intelligent traffic management systems, and a positive environmental impact due to lower emissions and improved efficiency are among the project’s benefits.

In prioritising CAM deployment in areas typically overlooked for 5G investment, the project contributes directly to the EU’s Gigabit Society objectives and the Sustainable Mobility Strategy. Through close technical coordination between Greek and Bulgarian operators, 5G SEAGUL is building the foundation for safer, more efficient, and environmentally conscious cross-border mobility in Southeast Europe.
