The From Cloud to Edge to IoT for European Data event on 7 July 2021 – organised between the Commission and the EU-IoT project – offered attendees the opportunity to learn about Cloud-Edge-IoT for European Data under Destination 3 Cluster 4 of the recently launched Horizon Europe programme. This half-day virtual event provided participants with a unique international networking experience with academics, researchers, and industry to forge winning partnerships, with over 100 one-on-one meetings scheduled both during the event and in the following days via the NGIoT platform.
Following from the Next-Generation IoT & Edge Computing Strategy Forum in April 2021, this event acted as an Information and Virtual Brokerage Session on the 2021 Horizon Europe Call “World Leading Data & Computing Technologies”, where more than 250 innovators and stakeholders from industry and academia joined online.

Horizon Europe projects will place a strong emphasis on EU Data Strategy, through initiatives that can generate momentum by advances in cloud computing. The overall purpose is to strengthen the EU’s position in the data economy, whilst investing in alternatives to leading cloud service providers such as a federation of Cloud infrastructure based in Europe. The EU has the unique opportunity to invest in data processing and computing at the edge and build on its strength in designing safe and complex systems.
Over the upcoming two years, the set of Horizon Europe topics will include three research and innovation projects on Edge operating systems, one Coordination and Support Action in Cloud-Edge-IoT, and another for the next-generation IoT roadmap. A research topic on open source for Cloud will be launched in 2022, with further research topics on Edge meta-operating systems and Cognitive Cloud opening next year, as well as vertical support for research and innovation that will be offered from 2023 onwards.
Edge Computing is the logical next step of the dominant Cloud Computing model. It will reduce the amount of data sent to the Cloud, bring real-time operations at the Edge, improve security and privacy, and reduce the energy use of future systems. There is great potential for Edge computing applications in Europe, but we must concentrate on the impact of ecosystems around critical and high value projects that accelerate key markets.
