The National School of Archival Sciences hosted a hybrid event that gathered nearly 300 students, graduates, and staff to commemorate the Day of the Peruvian Archivist, which celebrates Guillermo Durand Florez, a pioneer of Archival Science in Peru.
The National School of Archival Sciences is the main training centre for Peruvian archivists. It is dependent on the National Archive of Peru, whose Institutional Head Nicolás Diez chaired the event.
Carlota Bustelo and Miguel Umaluff, of the eArchiving Initiative were responsible for delivering the keynote address of the event on how the European Union’s eArchiving Initiative helps to build a common environment for the digital preservation of archives. The event also celebrated staff members with over 20 years of dedication to the training of future generations of Peruvian archivists.
In his speech, Miguel Umlauff presented the audience with challenges of the digital preservation of archives and its importance in the deployment of a paperless public administration, and how the use of the correct use of tools such as standards and specifications helps to keep the institutional memory of a country.
Carlota Bustelo presented the philosophy behind the archiving Initiative, and how it helps to create a paneuropean environment of interoperable, reusable, and lasting digital archives. She also presented on the different community building opportunities the Initiative has set in place.
By participating in events like this one, the eArchiving Initiative shows its commitment to going beyond the borders of the European Union when building a broader community for the digital preservation of archives.
