To function efficiently across European languages, language technologies must be trained with extensive volumes of multilingual language data.
The study notes that 7 in 10 users will always select their native language over English when browsing online. With more accessible language technologies, small and medium-sized enterprises will have the resources to provide their content in multiple languages. As a result, machine translation alone could boost intra-EU trade by up to €300 billion for EU SMEs already active in international trade. Being in control of the data and underlying infrastructures is essential to achieve these benefits. The study highlights the EU’s approach as one that protects its sovereignty and values as it aims to pave the way for safe data governance and AI.
This study comes two months after the launch of the ALT-EDIC and Language Data Space, which aim to address the shortage of European language data needed to train AI models. Promoting the sharing of language data is key for GenAI applications to function accurately in European languages.
