Expert workshop on a common European smart communities’ data space

A group of European experts have recently discussed how to pursue the Commission’s ambition in building a common European smart communities’ data space on the European federated cloud infrastructure.

Building on priorities set out in the Data Strategy, the European Green Deal Data Space aims at exploiting the major potential of data in support of the European Green Deal priorities. Smart cities and communities are promising places for implementing these objectives, as they strive for reducing resource input, pollution and improving people’s quality of life, using digital technologies and intelligent solutions. The Commission therefore, aims to support the federation of local data ecosystems for climate-neutral and smart communities that could serve as a common European smart communities’ dataspace and contribute to building the European Green Deal dataspace.

The initiative, to be supported under the proposed Digital Europe Programme, will help cities and communities share large pools of data in priority areas, between communities, stakeholders and across borders and sectors. It will also enable the implementation of AI-enabled data-services on a large scale and spur a dynamic European smart cities market.
