The Memorandum of Understanding formalises cooperation between ECSO and 5G IA in the area of cybersecurity and 5G. This cooperation will focus on identifying and addressing the needs of vertical sectors and research priorities for the development of secure technologies and reliable 5G platforms, as well as preventing fragmentation in the deployment of technology across borders and sectors. This is especially important, as 5G networks will serve not only human users but also connected objects, and cover a wide range of areas including eHealth, transport, energy and entertainment.
Background
Both ECSO and 5G IA work with the European Commission to develop areas of the Digital Single Market:
- In 2013, 5G IA and the Commission launched the 5G Infrastructure Public-Private Partnership, a 5G collaborative research programme that aimed at fostering industry-driven research to build the next generation of communication infrastructure.
- In 2016, ECSO signed a contractual Public-Private Partnership on cybersecurity with the Commission, with the aim of bringing together the public and private sectors to engage in research and innovation that will make innovative and trustworthy ICT products, services and software available in Europe.
