As part of an EU initiative to introduce true multilingualism to users’ browsing experience, the Commission has launched WEB-T, a multilingual automated translation plugin. This plugin will allow website owners to make their content available in more than 24 languages.
Accessing content in their native language is an important part of the online experience for many Europeans. Recent data from the European Commission found that 59% of Europeans prefer to read content in their native language, and that some groups, particularly the elderly, are more likely to leave a page if it is not available in their preferred language.
WEB-T addresses these concerns, ensuring equitable access to information online.
By providing website content in multiple languages, website owners and content creators will be able to stay competitive and inclusive, connecting with more users, improving engagement and ensuring wide access to their digital spaces – research shows that machine translation alone has the potential to massively boost intra-EU trade for EU SMEs.
The launch comes shortly after the opening of the ALT-EDIC, which aims to address the shortage of European language data for AI models to increase multilingual artificial intelligence across the EU. The European Language Data Space was launched at the same event as the ALT-EDIC, and enhances the collection and sharing of multilingual data in the EU.
About WEB-T
WEB-T is a multilingual, automated website translation solution developed under the European Commission's DIGITAL Europe programme.
The plugin is available for free and can be integrated effortlessly into backend systems. It is compatible with leading website platforms, including WordPress, WooCommerce, Drupal, Magento, and Joomla, and can also be integrated into various CMS with ease.
In addition to offering automated machine translation (MT) to connect Europeans across different languages, WEB-T has also integrated MT into other major global languages, such as Chinese, Arabic, and Japanese. This allows the plugin not only to serve as a tool for European interconnectivity but also to support businesses in their goals towards global business expansion.
