Europeana 280: connecting Europeans to their art heritage
Europe's digital library Europeana today launches Europeana 280, a cross-border campaign to get people interested in Europe’s artworks and their evolution across centuries. The campaign sheds light on the new Europeana Art History Collections, bringing together artworks such as Femmes de Tahiti by Paul Gauguin, Las Meninas by Diego Velázquez or Sălciile de la Chiajna by Ștefan Luchian. Overall, Europeana invited all 28 EU Member States to nominate 10 pieces of art held in their country that have contributed to a major European art movement. All these artworks are shared in the new online collection which can also be discovered through a series of public events.
Faces of Europe
Today sees the launch of the Faces of Europe virtual exhibition, which brings together highlights from every country to tell the story of European culture through the eyes of its artists. New chapters will be revealed every fortnight until July. The Europeana 280 collection can further be explored and enjoyed online via Europeana Collections, through apps DailyArt and ArtStack
#BigArtRide
#BigArtRide is a virtual reality art experience where people can jump on a bike, put on virtual reality headsets and race through a virtual city filled with artworks. Starting today in Brussels and The Hague, the tour will continue in Amsterdam, Paris, Rome, London, Berlin, Prague, Wroclaw and Bratislava. This initiative is support by the Dutch Presidency of the EU. It is accompanied by a colouring app, CREATE, which lets you interact with and personalise works featured in #BigArtRide.
In museums and galleries in other cities across Europe, digital installations – Jumping Jacks - combining art with interactive technology and moving, dynamic human bodies will let participants project their own body transformed by cut-outs from the Europeana 280 artworks onto walls and ceilings, - creating their own unique, moving artworks.

It is supported by the EU programme Connecting Europe Facility which co-funds trans-European networks and infrastructures.
Europeana, helps cultural institutions move online and reach new markets in the digital single market driving standardisation, interoperability and innovation. Europeana also promotes the creative re-use of cultural content in new, value-added products and services. For example, 155 of the pieces of art chosen by Europe’s museums, libraries and galleries to share through Europeana 280 have been made available under open licences that allow re-use, for enjoyment, or use in research, education or new designs, apps or services.
