The FIWARE ICT Challenge Vienna - create a Smart City app in 48 hours!

The FIWARE ICT Challenge is a developers’ competition taking place at the ICT 2018 event. Participants will create apps that make cities a better place to live in, using real-time data from cities and other data sources, together with FIWARE open source components.

FIWARE is an open source cloud platform, funded by DG CONNECT and the European Commission, that aims to help developers, SMEs and start-ups create new smart applications. The FIWARE Challenge will focus on four areas:

  1. Smarter Together – Gamification for Citizen Engagement (City of Vienna): Creating apps serving as gamified travel guides to motivate residents to explore their region, making people aware of climate change and energy efficiency.
  2. Inform, Engage and Participate – The LCM Challenge: Gamification of data-access. Creating an app – a “performance cockpit” – that not only helps people easily understand performance data, but also allows users to adjust parameters of the data virtually in order to learn the best way to optimize the performance. This could be for energy consumption or any other kind of performance measure.
  3. Discover Open Data Challenge: There are over 20,000 datasets in Austrian data portals. Making the most of this by creating an app that transforms machine-readable data into human-readable data – a pocket guide that assists in searching, finding and understanding pertinent data.
  4. Wien Energie Challenge: Creating an app for smart energy management and maintenance, taking into account both supply and demand data, such as the output of solar panels and building-level energy needs.

The best apps will be used in a project by one of the Challenge Partners and win prize money totalling 10,000 Euros.

The FIWARE ICT Challenge Vienna starts on 4 December 2018 at 17h CET with a short pitch by each team. They will then develop their apps and present them to a jury on 6 December at 11h. The winners will be announced at 13h in the ICT 2018 Awards session.
