As a part of the High-level multi-stakeholder event on the Future of the Internet, which took place in Prague on 2 November 2022, the Commission held 4 workshops based on 4 different principles of the Declaration for the Future of the Internet (DFI). The reports from these workshops are now available.

The purpose of these workshops was to discuss common challenges with the multi-stakeholder community, and how to live up to the DFI vision in practice.

The multi-stakeholder community discussed the 4 challenges of:

  1. Protecting human rights in the age of online platforms;
  2. Preventing internet shutdowns and platform-specific restrictions;
  3. Promoting digital literacy to close the digital divide;
  4. Protecting and empowering youth online in full respect of all fundamental rights.

The workshops welcomed high-level representatives from governments, think tanks, academia, private companies and non-governmental organisations from around the world. In each workshop, these stakeholders shared best practices on matters related to each principle.

The discussions touched upon, among other things, the importance of human rights impact assessments for online platforms, the role of youth in the Internet governance space, the need to include advanced digital skills in school curricula and the increasing threat of internet shutdowns in authoritarian regimes.

The reports from these workshops are now available to download.
