Internet of Things entrepreneur in the running to win 2018 EU Women Innovator's Prize

The annual EU prize for Women Innovators 2018 announced the twelve successful business women shortlisted for this year. One of the nominees realised her idea thanks to funding for digital automation from Horizon 2020, the EU's funding programme for research and innovation.

The European Commission is committed to gender equality and is taking various actions to achive gender parity in various sectors.  Mariya Gabriel, European Commisisoner for Digital Economy and Society announced her initiative to facilitate the increase of women's participation in the digital sector.  One of the areas that she will be focussing on is to enable and encourage more women to participate in digital entrepreneurship and innovation.

In this context, the European Commission awards the EU Prize for Women Innovators, which puts successful women entrepreneurs in the spotlight and aims to increase awareness about the need for more women to create innovative companies in the EU. Three cash prizes of €100 000, €50 000 and €30 000 will be awarded in the main category.

Carlos Moedas, European Commissioner for Research, Science and Innovation, announced the nominees for this year's EU Prize for Women Innovators at a meeting of the European Parliament's Committee on Women's Rights and Gender Equality.

Alicia Asin Perez is still in the running for one of the three prizes in the main category. She co-founded the company Libelium in Zaragoza which is one of the most innovative businesses in the wireless domain in Europe. She is working to progress the Internet of Things (IoT) and develops intelligent sensor technology for several applications. Libelium is a partner in the EU funded Daedalus project which aims to provide a digital platform and multi-stakeholder ecosystem for the industrial automation domain.

The winner will be announced on 26 June 2018 at the Webit.Europe Festival in Sofia, Bulgaria
