The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) in collaboration with UNESCO Institute for Information Technologies in Education (UNESCO IITE) is launching a free online course on digital accessibility. The course explains how to design accessible websites and apps, meeting standards and providing an optimal user experience for everyone.
“Introduction to Web Accessibility” is a Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) that builds on the W3C's Web Accessibility Initiative open curricula developed with support from the WAI-Guide project, funded by the European Commission. This course will contribute to the implementation of the Web Accessibility Directive by promoting training, capacity building and awareness raising.
Featuring leading international expert trainers, the course explores web accessibility through real stories of people with disabilities showing how they use assistive technologies. It also introduces the international standards and explains how to integrate accessibility into organisations.
By the end of this course, students will understand the business benefits and social responsibility of web accessibility, as well as the broader benefits for everyone regardless of disability.
The course will be free of charge, with optional purchase of a certificate of completion. All teaching materials such as videos, speaker slides and notes will be released under Creative Commons license, so that the course can be replicated by others, for example in other languages.
The MOOC is now open for enrolment and can be followed from 28 January 2020 on edX platform.
About WAI-Guide project
WAI-Guide implements a coordination and support action funded by the European Commission under Horizon 2020 program. The project started on 1 January 2019 for a duration of three years. It aims, among other, to provide authoritative implementation guidance and training, thus growing capacities of available accessibility experts.
WAI-Guide draws together expertise from organisations representing people with disabilities, public bodies, industry, research and academia in order to develop accessibility solutions that are internationally recognised as authoritative references integrated into the vendor-neutral environment of the World Wide Web Consortium.
