IoTCrawler - A search engine for Internet of Things

Meet IoTCrawler, one of the projects in the ICT 2018 exhibition's IoT Security & Privacy booth. The project created a search engine for Internet of Things devices, that works in a secure and privacy-oriented way.

What do you expect to achieve in this project?

IoTCrawler is an advanced search engine for Internet of Things devices, making real-world data accessible and actionable in a secure and privacy-concerned manner. IoTCrawler works on defining the new generation of advanced search and discovery tools in the IoT ecosystem of the internet. It also supports security and privacy restrictions on how to disclose data that the IoT can provide, and create trusted data distribution and access on machine-oriented interactions. The project will also present IoT mechanisms for achieving European privacy legislations (GDPR).

How will European citizens benefit from this project, both from the technology developments it accomplishes as well as the scientific breakthroughs it may achieve?

In the case of IoTCrawler, it aims at a paradigm shift on both how IoT applications can access IoT resources, and on how IoT resources can make themselves discoverable.  In general, the impact of IoTCrawler and the other projects of the booth is to make the development of secure IoT systems easy, and lower the barrier for companies and SMEs to enter the IoT market. Moreover, cities and municipalities will benefit from the project as it makes more IoT data available for city authorities, citizens and Smart City solutions.

Eventually the project will boost the digitalization of EU society.  The impact will be important, as it will encourage citizens to have more confidence in IoT products and concepts, thereby boosting IoT adoption and deployment.

Is EU funding important for the European research? How has it contributed to your projects/careers/success?

Funding in this new and advanced research area is fundamental. First of all because we are looking for the technology of the future with an important level of disruptive research that need strategic funding. A joint European approach towards the development of new IoT services is important to build the Digital Single Market. This will also increase competitiveness on the world stage. Furthermore, a common EU-wide approach contributes to open discussions on standardisation in cross-sectorial projects ensuring that different aspects and perspectives (industry, city and research) are taken into account in the development of the solutions. The cooperation among academia, research centres, industry, SMEs and cities, as the baseline of H2020 projects, is a key added value of this funding to provide technology transfer to the European market.

What are you going to exhibit at ICT2018? What should visitors expect to see/experience upon visiting your booth?

The stand is not only focused on IoTCrawler, but is a collective action of several projects under the umbrella of the European IoT Security and Privacy Projects (IoT-ESP), involving SOFIE, ENACT, IoTCrawler and the associated security projects: ARMOUR, SMESEC and CIPSEC. The synergy of this association will be reflected in a set of tools and approaches to help citizens, city authorities, IoT developers including SMEs to ensure privacy and security in their daily interaction with IoT devices. In the case of IoTCrawler, we will present the first steps in a prototype based on IoTCrawler enablers. This includes a geographic search mechanism applied to data in the city, an intelligent transportation proposal based on crawling free parking spots for drivers, and a smart home activity detection service based on crawling available devices and sensor data. Additionally, flyers, videos and interviews will be available.
