Public services and information are increasingly offered online. One of the Commission’s top six political priorities is to build a Europe fit for the digital age, allowing everyone in Europe, including persons with disabilities, to benefit from technology.
According to the Web Accessibility Directive, all users should be able to "perceive, operate, and understand" public sector websites, the content of which must allow interpretation by assistive technologies, such as screen readers.
With public sector websites accessible since September 2020, the mobile apps of public sector bodies now must be accessible as of 23 June 2021.
The European Commission keeps working towards the inclusion of all: Europe's Digital Decade seeks to ensure that everyone in Europe benefits from digitalisation, and no one is left behind. Accessibility allows persons with disabilities to use digital services on an equal footing.
The implementation milestones of Web Accessibility Directive have passed, but the next phase is already in preparation, with the first MS reports in December, and a review due mid-2022. An open public consultation will be launched soon to gather feedback on the impact of the Directive on the public sector bodies' online accessibility.
