Coronavirus: First EU disinfection robots arrive in hospitals

Today two Slovenian hospitals received two of the first robots purchased by the Commission to disinfect patient rooms, thus helping reduce and contain the spread of coronavirus. A further 29 disinfection robots are deployed to hospitals in Belgium, Denmark, Germany, Estonia, Ireland, Greece, Spain, Croatia, Lithuania, Luxembourg and the Netherlands. These robots can disinfect a standard size patient room in as quickly as 10 minutes by using ultraviolet light and disinfect over 18 rooms in one charge.

Global environmental monitoring requires good connectivity

Copernicus – the EU’s Earth Observation and Monitoring Programme – analyses our planet and its environment for the benefit of European citizens. Large volumes of data flow in from satelites, land and marine systems and provide important insights on weather modelling, climate change and more to both public and private entities, for free. EU to set up new European Partnerships and invest nearly €10 billion for the green and digital transition

The Commission has proposed to set up 10 new European Partnerships between the European Union, Member States and/or the industry. The goal is to speed up the transition towards a green, climate neutral and digital Europe, and to make European industry more resilient and competitive. The EU will provide nearly €10 billion of funding that the partners will match with at least an equivalent amount of investment.

Europe puts forward proposal for Joint Undertaking on Smart Networks and Services towards 6G

The European Commission has adopted its legislative proposal for a strategic European partnership on Smart Networks and Services as a Joint Undertaking, with a public R&I investment of €900 million over the new long-term budget period 2021-2027. The Joint Undertaking will coordinate research activities on 6G technology under Horizon Europe as well as 5G deployment initiatives under the Connecting Europe Facility Digital and other programmes.

EU invests almost €7 million in European world-class supercomputing in Portugal

Today the European High-Performance Computing Joint Undertaking, which pools European resources to buy and deploy world-class supercomputers and technologies, announced the signature for a contract worth €20 million for a new supercomputing system: Deucalion in Portugal. The EU will contribute nearly €7 million to the cost of the supercomputer, which will be capable of up to 10 petaflops or 10 million billion calculations per second, and will be hosted by the Minho Advanced Computing Centre (MACC).

President von der Leyen at the ‘Masters of Digital 2021' event: ‘The 2020s can be Europe's Digital Decade'

The President of the Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, delivered a speech yesterday at the ‘Masters of Digital 2021' event, where she said: “I believe the 2020s can be Europe's Digital Decade. A decade when Europe becomes a global leader in the digital world. New ideas are coming from the old continent. European industry as a whole is entering a new era. One fourth of industrial robots in the world are produced in Europe.”
