This report provides multidimensional insights into the state of blockchain technology by identifying ongoing and upcoming transformations in a range of sectors and setting out an anticipatory approach for further exploration. Moving beyond the hype and debunking some of its controversies, it aims to offer both an in-depth and practical understanding of blockchain and its possible applications.

Sweden has joined the Innovation Radar, an initiative supported by the European Commission, which identifies high potential innovations and the key innovators behind them in Horizon 2020 projects.

Blockchain is one of the key emerging technologies that is shaping Europe’s future. Blockchain can help make interaction between citizens, enterprises and public organisations more efficient, reinforce trust and enable each party to retain control of their own data. It will be instrumental in building a citizen-centric, sustainable, transparent and inclusive European digital society. To make it happen, investing in the next frontier of technologies such as blockchain will be crucial to enhancing Europe’s technological sovereignty.

After three weeks of public voting, the decision has been made: out of 36 dynamic European innovators longlisted for this year’s Innovation Radar Prize, 12 will move to the next phase and compete in the final.
