4th Meeting of the Future Internet Forum

The third meeting of the Horizon 2020 Future Internet Forum took place in Brussels on 28 June 2017.

The meeting was dedicated to the Next Generation Internet Initiative (NGI), focusing on the follow up of the three main actions: Select a national NGI Contact Point and assign their role; Populate the NGI interactive map and carry out the relevant stakeholders to register for; Organise an NGI workshop until the end of 2017.

Commission endorsed Croatian National Broadband scheme for 2017-2023

The European Commission endorsed the Croatian EUR 101.4 million Broadband funding scheme. The Next Generation Network (NGN) Broadband Plan is in line with EU State Aid rules. The scheme aims to provide fast internet access where it is currently not available, in particular in rural areas.

Stakeholder Consultation Workshop on Mapping of Broadband Services in Europe

The European Broadband mapping project is developing a mapping application that will provide a georeferenced overview of the quality of fixed and mobile broadband services across Europe. The project gathers data from both national, public as well as private, international initiatives. A third workshop is being held to discuss with regulatory bodies and experts preliminary findings from a cross-country and cross-initiative comparison of connectivity data and to consult on mapping methodologies. So far more than 150 stakeholders have been involved in this project.

The importance of raising awareness for high speed connectivity in rural areas

Funding and technical difficulties are known issues for enabling high speed connectivity in rural areas. However, it is also a difficult task to get the end users on board with the programme. Group Multiplay accepted the challenge for the deployment of high speed connection in the Opolskie province in southern Poland.
