Basic principles and tips for 3D digitisation of cultural heritage

The Expert Group on Digital Cultural Heritage and Europeana has been tasked by the member states to contribute to the development of guidelines on 3D cultural heritage assets. The resulting list of basic principles and tips for 3D digitisation of tangible cultural heritage contains 10 basic principles and a number of tips for each of them geared toward cultural heritage professionals, institutions and regional authorities in charge of Europe's precious cultural heritage.

Commission launches public consultation on digital access to European cultural heritage

The Commission has opened a public consultation on the opportunities offered by digital technologies for the cultural heritage sector. Stakeholders and all interested people are invited to provide feedback on the Recommendation of 2011 on digitising cultural material and digital preservation. The aim is to propose a more appropriate policy instrument to support the digital transformation of cultural heritage.

In the context of such limitations, digital 3D technologies can be an effective solution for keeping our cultural heritage virtually accessible to citizens. Furthermore, 3D digital cultural heritage can provide important opportunities for cultural heritage institutions and for other sectors that re-use such content, including in particular in the tourism sector, for immediate resilience and recovery but also for long-term sustainability.

7th Meeting of the European Commission’s Expert Group on Digital Cultural Heritage and Europeana (DCHE)

The Expert Group on Digital Cultural Heritage and Europeana (DCHE) provides a forum for cooperation between Member States' bodies and the European Commission in the area of digitisation of and access to cultural material and digital preservation, and gives guidance on Europeana’s annual work programmes under the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF).
The Group also provides advice on specific policy issues where such advice is important for the development of Union policies or legislation (Commission Decision of 7/3/2017 setting up the Expert Group on Digital Cultural Heritage and Europeana).

Study on quality in 3D digitisation of tangible cultural heritage

The purpose of this call for tenders is to carry out a study to map parameters, formats, standards, benchmarks, methodologies and guidelines, relating to 3D digitisation of tangible cultural heritage, to the different potential purposes or uses, i.e. preservation, reconstruction, reproduction, research, and general-purpose visualisation, by type of tangible cultural heritage, i.e. immovable or movable, and by degree of complexity of tangible cultural heritage, e.g. low, medium, high, and very high (reference VIGIE-2020-654).

Pilot project in Italy to create new reference example for 3D digitisation of cultural heritage

Earlier this month, the Department for Architecture of the University of Ferrara and the Central Institute for Catalogues and Documentation (ICCD) of the Italian Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities signed an agreement to cooperate on 3D digitisation of cultural heritage using the results of EU-funded Horizon 2020 Project INCEPTION, which was coordinated by Professor Roberto di Giulio of the University of Ferrara and ended in May 2019.
