Study on the application of the Orphan Work Directive

The European Commission will soon launch a call for tenders for a service contract of a maximum value of EUR 143.999.
The purpose of this call for tenders is to commission a study to analyse the application of Directive 2012/28/EU of the European Parliament and of the Council of 25 October 2012 on certain permitted uses of orphan works. The attached Tender Specifications describe the objectives and the tasks of this study (reference: SMART 2019/0042).

6th Meeting of the European Commission’s Expert Group on Digital Cultural Heritage and Europeana (DCHE)

This expert group provides a forum for cooperation between Member States' bodies and the European Commission in the area of digitisation, online accessibility of cultural material and digital preservation and gives guidance on Europeana’s annual work programmes under the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF).
The Group also provides advice on specific policy issues where such advice is important for the development of Union policies or legislation (Commission Decision of 7/3/2017 setting up the Expert Group on Digital Cultural Heritage and Europeana).

New EU projects on curation of digital assests and advanced digitisation

The Innovation Actions selected under this call (DT-Transformations-12-2018-2020) addressed the curation and preservation of digital assets. The action called for new technologies and methods that enable, among others, richer experiences, storytelling and the linking of physically separated objects and sites, and tangible and intangible heritage.

EU project develops virtual reality application for theatre and film productions

Virtual reality glasses and newly developed software help directors, actors, stage designers and other participants to plan the scenes of a theatre or film production realistically in advance. The technology developed under the direction of the University of Bremen in the "first.stage" project is also useful for animation studios.

As in so many other areas, digital technologies have opened up new and better ways of preserving our cultural treasures.

A Season of Classic Films: European classics screened at cultural heritage venues across Europe

This summer, European film classics will be screened in some of Europe's most iconic cultural heritage venues. From tomorrow until the end of September, classic films from across the EU will be screened free of charge in a wide variety of venues in 13 EU countries – from small towns to capital cities – highlighting Europe's rich and diverse cultural heritage. As part of the wider restoration and digitisation of heritage films, the event series “A Season of Classic Films” is supported by Creative Europe MEDIA programme.
