The aim of the European Catalogue of Information and Communication
Technologies (ICT) Water Standards and Specifications is to support the Action Plan for Water Services in the context of the Digital Single Market as well as the Rolling Plan of the European Commission for digitalisation of the water management.

The European Location Interoperability Solutions for eGovernment (ELISE) action aims to enable digital government through geospatial data and location intelligence. It is a package of legal, policy, organisational, semantic and technical interoperability solutions that aim to facilitate more efficient and effective digital cross-sector interaction and data re-use.

About 40 cities and community representatives as well as 20 colleagues from the European institutions met (online) for the second time on 18 June. Eddy Hartog from the European Commission chaired the meeting.

Following the first year of activity of the Community of Practice on Cities (CoP-CITIES), the publication of the Future of Cities report and its supporting knowledge base, the first event of COP-CITIES held on 26 May 2020 focused on the digital transformation of cities and communities.

The EU is funding 11 new technology and trial projects to enable 5G ecosystems in Europe. These include eight new projects that aim to build a first-class European supply chain for 5G hardware. In addition, three new projects will provide applications in cross-border connected and automated mobility. The cross-border projects will provide 5G connectivity and pave the way for autonomous driving on main road, train and maritime routes.

Digital Innovation Hubs (DIHs) have and important role in accelerating the take-up of Artificial Intelligence (AI) by helping public administrations identify necessary datasets, develop algorithms, train AI and link to computing facilities, building on the “AI-on on-demand” platform.

Recent growth in computing power, availability of data and progress in algorithms have turned Artificial Intelligence (AI) into one of the most strategic technologies of the 21st century. The European Commission has been working with Member States through a coordinated approach, to create a European framework for developing and using AI for ‘good and for all’. An important element of the European AI Strategy and Coordinated plan is to increase efforts for the take-up of ethical, human-centric and secure AI in areas of public interest.

Taking the momentum of the European Commission launching the new EU growth strategy, the European Green Deal, over 120 project representatives and policymakers gathered at the Workshop “Innovative services and products for the circular economy” organised by EASME in Brussels. This workshop gathered important insights to feed the current policymaking, days before the publication of the new Circular Economy Action plan and the New Industrial Strategy for Europe.

Water is key for society and for the economy. We need to address the pressing water challenges, adapt water resource management to mitigate the effects of climate change, combat resource pollution and depletion, manage demands for water, address the water–energy nexus, and prevent degradation of ecosystems. Digital solutions can play a vital role in addressing some of these challenges.
