The project is set against the background of a European media sector facing several challenges. It aims to accelerate innovation in the media sector in Europe, building on the involvement of media outlets, publishers associations and journalists’ and media unions, through the exchange of young media professionals who will cooperate on ad hoc media innovation projects centred around the following themes: 1) Constructive journalism 2) Fact-checking 3) Data-journalism and 4)  Artificial Intelligence / Language technologies

A budget of EUR 1,200,000 was earmarked by the European Parliament in 2018 for a Pilot Project facilitating the mobility of young media professionals and cross-border cooperation.  Further to a Call for Proposals, the European Commission awarded a grant to a consortium led by the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) Studies in Media, Innovation and Technology (SMIT) research group
