Europe Day – Big Stories from Small Countries!

Every year, on 9 May we celebrate Europe Day - the anniversary of the historic Schuman Declaration in 1950, but also the first official step in the creation of the European Union. Numerous events are being held on that day throughout Europe focusing on content that shows the diversity in the Old Continent and promotes European values.

The Creative Europe MEDIA programme is a good example of promoting cultural diversity through the support to the development, promotion and distribution of European films, series, documentaries and videogames within Europe and beyond. Since 1991, the MEDIA Programme has invested more than € 2,6 billion in European creativity and cultural diversity by supporting the European audiovisual sector.

Organised by a group of Creative Europe MEDIA desks, the event “Europe Day - Big Stories from Small Countries” aims to highlight four successful films supported by MEDIA and coming from five small European countries: Croatia, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Slovenia. Without the MEDIA support, that encourages co-productions, films from countries with low production capacity would not be able to achieve that much visibility and competitiveness.

On 8 May at 20:00 CET, four MEDIA-supported films will be made available online for free, for a period of 48 hours, for film lovers in Croatia, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Slovenia to have a chance to enjoy less known cinematographies from these EU neighbours from far and near. All the films were produced by the five participating countries and have won awards at international film festivals. Successful at home and abroad, they show us that great art can be created by sharing ideas, skills and means.
