Günther H. Oettinger, Commissioner for the Digital Economy and Society outlined the Commission’s plan to launch a €1 billion flagship initiative on quantum technology.
Europe has a well acknowledged world-class scientific and technical expertise in Quantum Technologies, supported by almost 20 years of EU investment, contributing to future applications in communication, metrology, sensing, simulation and computing.

The Quantum Manifesto is a call to launch an ambitious European initiative in quantum technologies, needed to ensure Europe’s leading role in a technological revolution now under way. The Manifesto is now available online for collecting stakeholder endorsement, before its official release during the Quantum Europe Conference in May 2016.
AXA Research Fund has awarded ICFO (The Institute of Photonic Sciences) with a Chair for a quantum information technology project that will focus on risks associated with data privacy. The chair has a budget of € 1.7 million and during the first 5 years, it will be led by Prof. Antonio Acín.
What will it take for Europe to stay at the forefront of the second quantum revolution? A round table event was convened on 13 October 2015 by Günther H. Oettinger, Commissioner for the Digital Economy and Society, with the participation of Carlos Moedas, Commissioner for Research, Innovation and Science, and it was followed by a stakeholder meeting. Those were the opportunity to discuss industrial interest, the way forward to bridge from excellent quantum technology research to future commercial exploitation, and a potential European strategy for investment in quantum technologies.
Commissioner for the Digital Economy and Society, Gunther H. Oettinger, and Minister of Economic Affairs of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, Henk Kamp, today visited QuTech, a world-class institute building devices for Quantum Computers and Quantum Internet in Delft. The Commissioner and the Minister stated that action is needed to ensure Europe remains a world leader in Quantum Technology.
A participatory workshop on Quantum Technologies and Industry was held in Brussels on 6 May 2015. The aim was to identify what could be the markets for quantum technologies, and how these could be industrialised. The workshop report summarises the discussions and the action plan which emerged as a conclusion.
