Human Brain Project (HBP): 1st Workshop on data sharing and management

On 4 March 2015, this Workshop brought together for the first time experts from neuroscience/Human Brain Project and from e-infrastructure players. Drawing on experiences in other fields, the needs, conditions and incentives regarding data sharing and management including curation were discussed. Matching with pertinent e-infrastructure and service provisions that can be enhanced to support neuroscience will be necessary and coordination with relevant existing initiatives would be beneficial, e.g. via fora like Research Data Alliance (RDA).

Human Brain Project

The aim of the workshop was to:
• Discuss the needs of the neuroscience communities with respect to data sharing and data management including data curation; to explore the complexities of data sharing, including issues such as incentivising the academic community for moving to this scientific approach, by discussing the rationale and benefits, drawing on experiences in other fields, etc.

• Explore issues related to open data access, incl. data security and privacy, dilemmas around public/private interests, etc.

• Match with pertinent e-infrastructure & service provisions that can be enhanced to support neuroscience, for data storage, curation and analysis and related data semantics support.

• Share best practices, including regarding data management policies, processes and incentives that would ensure adherence of data providers, storing entities and users; to coordinate with existing initiatives relevant for the above aspects.
