The European Open Science Cloud to boost the international research data community

On 22 October 2019 the research data community gathered in Helsinki to exchange on how the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC) could position itself as a vehicle for excellence in science at international level. EOSC is the open and trusted environment for managing research data.

230 participants from 33 countries attended this event organised by the EOSC Secretariat in collaboration with the EOSC executive board and the Research Data Alliance (RDA)

The event offered an open platform for data producers, data users and service providers from all over the world to exchange best practices on open science and share feedbacks and expectations with the EOSC Executive and Governance Boards.

Such regular exhanges between the EOSC users and its governance is essential to ensure the effective and quick establishment of EOSC and boost its benefits for scientists, science and society.

The outcome of the discussions will help the EOSC governance to set future priorities. It will also serve to assess what potential, new topics can be fed into the RDA working groups to address the international dimension of EOSC. The discussion will  continue in the coming weeks throught the EOSC Symposium event, taking place on 26-28 November 2019, in Budapest, Hungary.

Background

The EOSC, proposed in April 2016 as part of the European Commission Communication “European Cloud Initiative - Building a competitive data and knowledge economy in Europe”,  federates existing and emerging data infrastructures and provides European researchers with world-class data infrastructures, resources and services.

The EOSC portal, officially launched in November 2018, is the result of the progressive integration and consolidation of e-infrastructure projects, with the help of Horizon 2020 funding. It is a collective effort by the OpenAIREEOSC-hubeInfraCentral and EOSCpilot projects that builds on the experience and technology of major pan-European e-infrastructures, universities and research infrastructures.
