EU and Mexico to reinforce cooperation on digital and connectivity

The EU and Mexico agreed to continuously cooperate on several digital policy areas including digitalisation of industry, research cooperation, standardisation, eCommerce, online platforms, telecoms regulation, audio-visual regulation, eGovernment and data protection.

The partners also identified next steps to advance connectivity, cooperate on High Performance Computing, exchange on European Digital Innovation Hubs and Fiware, and grasp opportunities provided by BELLA, the new transatlantic submarine fibre-optic cable.

The EU shared best practices and lessons learnt in establishing the Digital Single Market as both sides of the Atlantic face the same challenges and opportunities presented by the digital transformation of our economies & societies. The exchange confirmed the decision of Mexico to made a priority bridging the regional and social digital divide. European industry representatives also contributed to the preparation of the official Dialogue by discussing technical aspects of legislative and policy developments.

Khalil Rouhana, Deputy Director-General of DG CNECT and Salma Jalife, Undersecretary for Communications and Technological Development of Mexico, Secretariat for Communications and Transports, co-chaired this second EU-Mexico digital economy dialogue on 29 May 2019 in México City.

Background

The first dialogue with Mexico on digital economy took place in May 2017. Mexico is one of the EU's strategic partners and is looking for best practices to opening up its market and compete in the telecoms market. Its radical transformation of the telecoms and audio-visual markets following a reform of 2014 has brought the country to a much closer level playing field with the EU digital market.
