Shaping Europe’s digital future

European Co-operation on innovation in digital manufacturing

  • EVENT
  • Offentliggørelse 21 Januar 2015

The impact of digital technologies on manufacturing is a major aspect in the development of the digital economy and has recently become the focus of political attention in several EU member states. Digital technologies play an essential role in value creation in all industrial sectors today and bring about radical transformation to all aspects of manufacturing and related services.

Higher added value originates in three dimensions and in particular from their combination:

  • Innovation in products through "ICT-inside": the opportunities that arise today from embedding ICT in any product and artefact are the almost infinite.
  • Transformation in processes – "digital manufacturing": digital innovations affectthe full product lifecycle "from cradle to grave" i.e. innovations span from product design and simulation tools to automation and shop floor controls and from logistics and supply chain management down to product tracking and recycling.
  • Radical/disruptive changes in business models: digital technologies are radically modifying the business of well-established industries such as automotive, lighting or textiles.

At recent events like the Public Hearing on Advanced Manufacturing and Digital Technologies and the Digital Action Day 2014, representatives from industry and public authorities discussed how to maximise the contribution of ICT in manufacturing to generate growth, competitiveness and jobs in Europe and how to leverage national and regional efforts in this area to speed up the modernisation of the European industry. General consensus was found to work in partnership across Europe to achieve critical mass and to align innovation strategies across borders.

This workshop is therefore bringing together representatives of Europe's major initiatives on innovation in digital manufacturing in order to explore synergies, stimulate co-operation and develop first ideas for a possible alignment of strategies and policies across EU-, national and regional initiatives.
