Stakeholders from the Internet Governance and Virtual Worlds communities are invited to attend the online Open Forum on the Governance of Virtual Worlds, which will feature presentations from key experts from academia, industry and the technical community. The forum will also feature an initial open discussion on the building blocks needed for governing Virtual Worlds in line with EU values and principles, considering the transformative potential of this technology for the Open Internet.

The European Commission will present its preliminary plans for the organisation of a High Level multi-stakeholder conference on governance of Virtual Worlds in 2025.

Background

DG CONNECT in the European Commission has recently set-up a sub-group of the High Level Expert Group on Internet Governance (HLIG) focusing on governance of Virtual Worlds, and helping to address Action 9 of the European Commission Strategy on Web 4.0 and Virtual Worlds.

The specific sub-group will have the responsibility of “providing input on global internet governance issues as regards virtual worlds and Web 4.0, as well as support the creation of a technical multi-stakeholder forum to address certain aspects of virtual worlds and Web 4.0 beyond the remit of existing internet governance bodies and liaise with the Expert Group on the transition to Web 4.0 and Virtual Worlds in relation to these topics”, in line with the HLIG Terms of Reference.

As it is regular practice of the HLIG to meet with the stakeholder community, the European Commission is organising an Open Forum to discuss key issues concerning the governance of virtual world and progress on the creation of a technical multi-stakeholder forum.
