Standardisation and performance assessment in Biophotonics - the report

Standards are crucial. Often considered a side and boring activity by scientists, the can make the difference. To this aim, a workshop was organized by the European Commission to gather the various actors (researchers, clinicians/end users, companies, associations, standardization bodies, EC) and discuss the experience achieved and methodologies pursued.

The adoption of shared procedures for performance assessment of biophotonics devices and international consensus standards can help the deployment of novel techniques to clinical use by increasing their reliability and the reproducibility of results.

Following the first successful edition of the workshop in 2018, the 2019 workshop specifically targeted the development of a common strategy and a shared vision.

The workshop had two presentation sessions in the morning (on SETTING THE SCENE: INTERNATIONAL INITIATIVES and SPECIFIC APPLICATION CASES), and one session in the afternoon (on EUROPEAN REGULATION AND INNOVATION PATHS), with sixteen talks by prominent speakers in the field, followed by 3 different discussion tables, lead by internationally renowned actors.

About 50 scientists and professonals from all over Europe attended the event on site. Speakers came also from Japan and the USA. Most of the attendees were from University and Research Center, but Industry was also present. Representative of the Commission from 3 different Directorates General, CONNECT, RTD, GROW actively participated. Also, members from standardization bodies took part to it.

A total of 693 connections have been registered to the streaming with a peak of 16 people connected at the same time.

The workshop has been recorded, and the recording is now available.

Attached you will find a full report of the day, together with presented slides and video interviews with some of the partecipants: Alessandro Torricelli (Politecnico di Milano, IT), Fokko Wierenga (IMEC, NL) Hamid Dehghani (University of Birmingham, UK ), Paola Taroni (Politecnico di Milano, IT), Hideo Eda, (The Graduate School for the Creation of New Photonics Industries, JP), Maura Dantuma (University of Twente, NL)Shuxia Guo (Leibniz Institute of Photonic Technology, DE).

More initiatives are planned for the near future. Stay tuned!
