The Open Innovation 2.0 Conference will be a good opportunity to address in detail the Digital Single Market strategy, a vehicle for updating the single market principle which is one of the cornerstones of the European construction. Digital Single Market is an important European instrument that we all need within a global competition, creating the framework for new companies and new jobs.
The fact that Cluj-Napoca has been chosen to host this Conference in 2017 reflects the recognition of the local and regional efforts to create an open and functional innovation ecosystem. This is a great opportunity for our city to promote actors, projects, ideas, knowledge and technologies developed in Cluj-Napoca, in Transylvania and in Romania.
Cluj-Napoca is an important academic center, with 11 universities and around 80,000 students. Today, the cultural richness and dynamism are actually due to the academic tradition and our multiethnic past.
Cluj-Napoca is a growing city, in terms of number of artistic events. In 2015, our city hosted more than 2,000 cultural events. The cultural environment is completed by at least 100 annual festivals-various events in the field of theater, literature, dance, music, traditional and contemporary visual arts.
The economic engines of Cluj-Napoca are: ICT, energy industry, business support services and specialized medical services. The creative industries sector is also continuously developing, while the IT sector is attracting capital thus employing thousands of young people.
Cluj-Napoca is also the aerial gateway to Transylvania due to "Avram Iancu" International Airport. In the last years, this airport has recorded an annual average of more than one million passengers, which makes it the second largest airport in Romania and the most important in the region. Therefore, our city is permanently connected to 17 countries and over 35 destinations, out of which 11 are capitals.
