The researcher and copyright: author and user in the age of open science in France

The participants will explore the dual role of researchers, both as authors under French "droit d'auteur" (with its strong moral rights) and as users of third-party materials for research purposes.

Participants will also learn about the principles of open access policies and publications and the secondary publication right (SPR) existing under French copyright law.

Key objectives 

  1. Learn about the French droit d'auteur and its alignment with the EU copyright framework, with a focus on understanding the researcher's dual role as both an author and a user, the copyright regime for civil servants, and key frameworks like the Secondary Publication Right (SPR). 
  2. Discover best practices on implementing copyright in research activities, navigating the text and data mining (TDM) exception, and balancing Open Science principles with author’s rights.
  3. Acquire practical skills by applying legal knowledge to real-world case studies, particularly concerning TDM, research exceptions, and the use of Creative Commons licenses within the French moral rights context.
