Vice-President Andrus Ansip and Commissioner Günther H. Oettinger inaugurated CERT-EU's new state of the art offices today. The Computer Security Incident Response Team of the EU institutions moved into new premises to accommodate its increase in staffing and expansion of activity.

Andrus Ansip, Vice President of the European Commission for the Digital Single Market  said: “Trust and security are key components of the Digital Single Market. National administrations should lead by example and I would like EU institutions to be up there with the best. A permanent CERT for the EU institutions with adequate resources is a key asset for us to deal with the increasingly sophisticated cyber-attacks.”

Günther H. Oettinger, EU Commissioner for the Digital Economy and Society said: “The current threats can only be tackled with a high common level of cybersecurity and cooperation. CERT-EU supports EU institutions, bodies and agencies with up-to-date alerts and highly specialised expertise and tools in cyber defence. They are very well networked with their peers and partners in the Member States. It is only by working closely together that we will be able to effectively address the cyber security risks.”

CERT-EU was established in 2011, leveraging existing resources, as part of a cross-institutional initiative. It supports the various IT security teams in the EU institutions in their fight against sophisticated cyber-threats. It acts as the cyber-security information exchange and incident response coordination hub for its constituents, the EU institutions, bodies and agencies. In the past four years the team has gradually expanded in resources and expertise and has become a highly respected body.

Background

The resources of CERT-EU are provided by the EU institutions and agencies, including the European Commission, the Council, the European Parliament, the Committee of the Regions and Economic and Social Committee, and the European Network and Information Security Agency (ENISA). The team operates under the strategic oversight of an inter-institutional Steering Board.
