REVEAL and PHEME both aim to develop ICT technologies that allow a high level analysis of social media content. The two projects are collaborating to develop a set of innovative tools so that users will be able to reveal hidden "modalities" such as reputation, influence or credibility of information in two different fields: journalism and enterprise. For example, journalists can take information from social media sources such as Twitter and feed it into an application which then analyses what is being said and how reliable that information is. The journalists can then use this to improve their articles or extract that extra piece of information that makes their story more compelling and reliable, almost "straight from the horse's mouth".
REVEAL not only looks at what is being said on social networks, it further determines how trustworthy that information is analysing the content, the contributor and the context. The project also reveals indicators on impact, reputation, influence or credibility.
PHEME concentrates on identifying rumours in social networks, specifically focusing on four types: speculation, controversy, misinformation, and disinformation. For example, content generated by users on social media can be changed, manipulated or removed out of context, making it difficult to know the truth.
First results of the collaboration will be demonstrated at ICT2015 from 20 – 22 October in Lisbon. The joint stand of the two projects can be found in the Innovate-area under the headline "VerifyThis!"
