The European Commission endorsed the Croatian EUR 101.4 million Broadband funding scheme. The Next Generation Network (NGN) Broadband Plan is in line with EU State Aid rules. The scheme aims to provide fast internet access where it is currently not available, in particular in rural areas.

The scheme  will run till 12/2023 and increase high-speed broadband coverage at bandwidth rates of 100 Mbps symmetrical (i.e. upload and download). The new infrastructure will be financed through the European Regional Development Fund and complemented by national funds. The resulting network will be publicly owned.

Croatia's NGN will be rolled out partly in two types of areas: where there is no NGN backhaul network and/or areas where the backhaul infrastructure is insufficient to meet projected needs. The target areas for the investment are evidenced as market failure areas. To this end, Croatia carried out a detailed mapping exercise and two public consultations.

Further information is to be found in the Commission’s press release. Check also the country page for Croatia to learn more about the broadband development, policies, responsible authorities as well as other financing instruments.
