The virtual Workshop
This second and final stakeholder workshop on "5G Supply Market Trends Perspectives and Policy Options" will take place as an online event on Wednesday, 19 May 2021 from 10:00-12:00.
Please note that the workshop will be organised fully remotely through a web-conferencing system (HopIn) which also allows participants to interact with presenters.
Background
The study on the 5G supply market trends aims at providing the European Commission with an in-depth analysis on qualitative and quantitative information on the 4G and 5G equipment and services supply market trends.
The study provides a baseline assessment of the 5G equipment and services supply markets - including new deployment and operation models - and an analysis of the level of maturity of past, existing and upcoming open radio access networks (RANs) and the state of play in global international standardisation organisations regarding the open initiatives.
The purpose is to define scenarios on the future development of supply market trends, and identify and analyse potential policy options that facilitate a healthy development for European companies and SMEs in the evolving ecosystems.
Objectives of the Workshop
After the first workshop, where a baseline assessment of 5G supply market trends and the current state of play of relevant open initiatives were presented, this workshop aims to provide an overview on 1) key development pathways for 5G derived from a scenario development process, and 2) results of the scenario impact assessment in a selected number of impact dimensions including: market competition and costs, cybersecurity, energy efficiency and consumption, new services, applications and mobile traffic, interoperability and standarts needs, and overall impact for Europe.
The findings of the impact assessment and the policy options will be validated and discussed in an expert panel discussion. The discussion will provide input on several topics that are pertinent for the delineation of policy options:
- Which development pathways should be avoided, and which factors should be strengthened?
- What are key uncertainties for the future development that need to be tackled by European Union and national policy makers?
- What are key risks and opportunities for Europe?
- How can Europe detail its policy approach in the essential action areas: Research, Development and Innovation (R&I), Entrepreneurship & Entry of New Market Players, (Public) Procurement, and Regulation (including spectrum policy, security, standardisation)
The workshop is opened for all interested participants and will be attended by stakeholder representatives from mobile network operators, vendors of equipment and services and related associations, open initiatives and standardisation bodies, regulators, experts on cybersecurity, European and EU Member States policy makers, and vertical industries/services potentially benefitting from 5G technologies.
