Join us at EUSEW2024 - debate about using AI and GenAI in the energy sector

DG CONNECT and DG ENER bring the discussions on using AI and GenAI in the energy sector to the EUSEW2024’s stage.

The session’s objective is to discuss existing use cases of AI in the energy sector, but most importantly have a forward-looking reflection on the potential and the challenges of using AI, as well as generative AI, to accelerate the energy transition.

Almost two years ago the Commission adopted the Digitalisation of Energy Action Plan, proposing  concrete steps to further accelerate the digital and sustainable transformation of the EU’s energy system, in line with the European Green Deal, REPowerEU and the Digital Agenda for Europe.

The plan highlights the essential and transformative role of digital technologies like AI, IoT, data analytics and cloud computing, just to mention some of them, to ease pressure on a grid which includes more and more renewables and the uncertainty they can bring, through smart orchestration of the growing number of energy assets.

From the time of adoption of the Action Plan technologies evolved and we are now facing a new powerful paradigm: generative AI. It has the potential to revolutionise the efficiency of the energy system by providing a new generation of intelligence.

The session will start with keynote speeches from the European Commission’s Ditte Juul-Joergensen, Director-General, DG ENER and Lucilla Sioli, Director Artificial Intelligence and Digital Industry, DG CONNECT.

The 2nd part of the session will be dedicated to a panel, moderated by Paula Pinho, Director, DG ENER, benefiting from input from experts from the energy and digital ecosystems, as well as policy makers, as follows:

  • Dennis Hesseling, Head of Gas, Coal & Power Markets Division, IEA

  • Max Lemke, Head of Unit Internet of Things, DG CONNECT

  • Alberto Méndez Rebollo, CEO & Cofounder, Plexigrid

  • Shima Mousavi Gargari, Corporate Innovation Manager, TenneT TSO

  • Ray Pinto, Senior Director for Digital Transformation, Digital Europe

  • Nicolas Rambaud, Director Digital Risk Leader & Data Officer at AI Hub, Schneider Electric
