Lunch Sessions - DSA Stakeholder Workshops

The lunchtime session of the DSA Workshops event, taking place on the 27 June 2023, will consist of five workshops.

The lunchtime workshops will run from 13.10 - 14.30. Please see below for a description and the speakers for each:

 

Title: Countering and preventing hate and extremism in the DSA-era: challenges and new possibilities

 

Description

What are the challenges and needs linked to the identification and moderation of illegal hate speech faced by small platform? How will the DSA impact their work?

Starting from the example of right-wing extremist content, this workshop will explore the links between hate speech and violent extremism and the tools that can help tackle grey zone content considering both binding tools under the DSA and voluntary ones, such as the Code of Conduct on countering hate speech online.

Title: Protecting intellectual property on online services

 

Description

The workshop will discuss the state of play and state of the art of intellectual property protection online, and the impacts the Digital Services Act is expected to make in this environment. Speakers from all sides of the ecosystem will discuss the requirements and opportunities of the DSA with regards in IP rights, from counterfeit products on online marketplaces to copyright infringements on social media.

In particular, participants will discuss the systemic risks related to intellectual property present on very large online platforms, and the available means to mitigate them in consideration of users fundamental right to freedom of expression and information.

Title: Keeping children safe online

 

Description

In this workshop stakeholders, including Better Internet for Kids Youth Ambassadors, civil society and public authorities will discuss together how the DSA should facilitate better protection of children online.

They will look at current and emerging threats and best practices in driving change. The outcomes of the workshop will also feed into the Code of Conduct on age-appropriate design under the European Strategy for a better internet for kids (BIK+) supporting the DSA.

Title: What are the implications of the EUs new social media rules for the rest of the world

 

Description

This strong, global angle to platform regulation has a number of immediate implications, including a need to engage in DSA/DMA diplomacy to manage their global impact.

There will also be a wide scope and a need for long-term international cooperation on the DSA and DMA enforcement.

This workshop will assess these global implications of the DSA and try to identify opportunities and challenges in managing them.

Title: Data access for researchers opportunities, capacities and needs

 

Description

This workshop will be a forum to discuss the opportunities that Article 40 on Data access and scrutiny of the DSA provides for the research community, any potential challenges with data access and the capacities of researchers to make use of Article 40.
