EU Code Week

The EU Code Week initiative  encourages young people to take up coding and pursue a career in the science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields. From its modest beginnings in 2013, Code Week has grown into a thriving grassroots movement engaging millions every year, and making coding accessible, inclusive and fun.

What to expect and event highlights

This year, EU Code Week marks its 13th edition and will take place from 11 to 26 October 2025. Thousands of events will take place across EU countries and beyond, including workshops, hackathons, unplugged coding sessions and classroom activities. The initiative brings together students, educators, parents, tech enthusiasts and communities to explore digital creativity and innovation.

The launch of EU Code Week 2025 will take place on 13 October 2025 at the European Parliament, hosted by Vice-President Victor Negrescu. Executive Vice-President Henna Virkkunen will also participate in EU Code Week 2025 and address the community, underlining the importance of coding and digital skills for Europe’s digital future.

The event will bring together policymakers, educators, industry leaders and the grassroots community members, and will also be livestreamed on EU Code Week’s Youtube channel.

The 2025 launch event, on 13 October 2025, 14:00–16:00 CEST, will include:

  • Opening remarks from EU leaders and the European Commission
  • A keynote Still Coding the Future! by Ajsel Budlla, EU Code Week Digital Innovation Award winner
  • A panel on The Power of Communities in Europe’s Digital Future
  • Spotlights on Girls in Digital Week, AI in education and careers, Minecraft coding, and the EU Code Week Hackathons

Registration details and draft agenda are available in the  EU Code Week 2025 Launch Event blogpost. To provide more information about the week’s events and key highlights, a dedicated brochure has been prepared.

What’s next for Code Week?

The EU is committed to increasing basic digital skills among at least 80% of those aged 16–74, and the Commission encourages Member States, educational authorities and civil society to scale up efforts and embed digital skills in education systems.

In parallel, the EU has set a target of reaching 20 million ICT specialists by 2030 to meet the growing demand for digital talent. Code Week contributes to both objectives by raising awareness, sparking interest in coding and digital literacy, and encouraging people of all ages to develop skills that are essential for Europe’s digital future.

Looking ahead, EU Code Week aims to widen its reach, with more activities in underrepresented regions, amplified support for informal and non-formal learning, and stronger synergies with other EU digital policy priorities.

The Commission invites everyone to take part in EU Code Week, to organise or join events, make use of the available resources, and help build a more digitally empowered Europe.
