The European Cinema Night is back: the MEDIA Programme goes local to connect citizens through films

MEDIA – the EU's programme supporting the European audiovisual sector – is organising the second edition of a unique event, the European Cinema Night, with the objective of bringing Europe closer to citizens while celebrating together the richness of the European film culture. 'European Cinema Night – Sharing stories we love' will take place from 2 to 6 December 2019 in 54 cities across Europe and will reach more than 14500 people.

With free screenings of more than 40 European films supported by MEDIA, and after the success of the 2018 edition, the European Cinema Night is back. It aims to show how the European Union – through Creative Europe MEDIA – not only benefits the creative and cultural industries, but also serves our society at large. This initiative will connect cinemagoers in numerous cities across Europe and will help to strengthen the links among people around a shared European identity based on diversity.

Each of the 54 cinemas taking part in the initiative will organise a special evening event between 2 and 6 December 2019, where they will screen a MEDIA-supported film. The films have been chosen by local cinemas according to the interest of their public, in order to better adapt to the diversity of audiences. The local venues are all renowned cinemas belonging to the Europa Cinemas network, which is, together with Creative Europe MEDIA, one of the organisers.

The European Cinema Nights 2019 (programme as pdf) kicks off on 2 December in Luxembourg with the screening of The Whistlers, by Corneliu Porumboiu. All the screenings will be followed by a short debate where film lovers will have the opportunity to meet not only filmmakers and film critics to discuss the focus of the films but also European representatives that will be able to explain more about the MEDIA programme and its importance to shape the European audiovisual landscape.

This event is part of the European Commission “going local” communication campaign, which shows citizens how European policy is linked to their lives – in this case to the emotions they feel at cinemas – and how by attending a locally-grounded event they can be part of a globally-connected experience across Europe.
