The European Commission at the San Sebastian Film Festival 2023

The European Commission heads to the 71st edition of the San Sebastian Film Festival taking place from 22 to 30 September 2023

The San Sebastian Film Festival (SSIFF) is a yearly rendez-vous for cinema-lovers to celebrate the richness of audiovisual works from Europe and beyond, and for audiovisual professionals to discuss the most pressing topics in the sector.

Meetings with the industry

Representatives of the European Commission will attend the festival to engage with the industry. Renate Nikolay (Deputy Director General at DG Connect) will be present for the first time, together with Lucia Recalde (Deputy Director, Head of Unit Audiovisual Industry and Media Support Programmes).

One of the highlights is the event around the agreements between the European Investment Fund (EIF) and financial intermediaries under InvestEU, an event organised jointly with the EIF.

The Creative Europe MEDIA Desks

  • As in previous editions, the Creative Europe Desk MEDIA Euskadi will hold a stand on the premises of the Industry Club, Kursaal, from 22 to 30 September (9: 30 to 19.00). The stand will also welcome the Desks of Andalusia, Belgium, Bulgaria, Spain, Catalonia and Portugal. Producers, distributors, filmmakers, festivals and all audiovisual professionals who are interested in collaborating with professionals from these countries will have the opportunity to get information about funding from the MEDIA programme and collaboration opportunities with partners from the represented countries.
  • Professionals interested in opportunities of film and series co-productions with Belgium are very welcome to meet with the Belgian Desks (Flanders and Wallonia-Brussels) upon registration.

MEDIA-supported films

23 EU-supported films gathered nominations at SSIFF and paralel sections, with 9 titles shortlisted under the official selection and therefore competing for the prestigious Golden Shell. The winners will be announced at the awards ceremony on 30 September.
