A new project sets the foundations of the next generation of supercomputers in Europe

MEEP (MareNostrum Experimental Exascale Platform) is the first project to receive funding from the European High-Performance Computing Joint Undertaking (EuroHPC JU). The project aims to develop open source technologies to underpin a competitive and innovative HPC ecosystem in Europe.

Launched in January 2020, the project is coordinated by the Barcelona Supercomputing Center and will run for a 3-year period with a budget of €10.3 million.

MEEP aims to develop an exploratory supercomputing infrastructure for the development, integration, testing and co-design of a wide range of European technologies which could form part of future European exascale systems -systems able to perform one trillion (1018) operations per second- and would be based on European-developed intellectual property. The ultimate goal is to create an open full-stack (software and hardware) ecosystem that could form the foundation for many other European systems, both in HPC and embedded computing, with benefits for numerous stakeholders within academia and industry.

Background

The EuroHPC JU began its operation in 2018 and today 32 European countries are members of the initiative alongside with private stakeholder .The EuroHPC JU aims at pooling EU and participating countries’ resources to develop a world-class supercomputing ecosystem in Europe and reach exascale capabilities by 2022.

Eight sites have been selected to host the first EuroHPC supercomputers: three pre-exascale supercomputers (capable of executing more than 150 Petaflops, or 150 million billion calculations per second) and five petascale supercomputers (capable of executing more than one Petaflop, or 1 million billion calculations per second). The procurement process (acquisition, installation and maintenance) for this new HPC machines has started and is ongoing.

More information can be found on the EuroHPC JU’s website.
