What they say about the electronics strategy for Europe

The €5 billion public-private partnership ECSEL was launched on 30 June, on the occasion of an important event in Brussels. ECSEL is the core of the Electronics Strategy for Europe to mobilise €100 billion in private investments and create 250,000 jobs in Europe by 2020.

Here is what keynote speakers said about ECSEL and the strategy:

  • "I am happy that this partnership is now active – it shows that the EU and Member States can work together quickly when there is a clear case for action"
Neelie Kroes, European Commission Vice President
  • "ECSEL is more than a technology project, and offers a route to securing Europe's competitiveness in a sector where no country is strong enough to go it alone" "The new European Commission should see micro-electronics as a priority"
Georg Schütte, State Secretary, German Federal Ministry of Education and Research
  • "Microelectronics is key to every major component of industry. This is not just about the future of the micro- and nano-electronics sector, but about Europe's ability to compete"
Ben Verwaayen, Chairman, Electronic Leaders Group
  • "Cooperation - as ENIAC demonstrated - is the only way to build something bigger than the sum of the parts"
Andreas Wild, Executive Director of the ENIAC Joint Undertaking

On 30 June, the Commission also received the final recommendations of the Electronics Leaders Group, CEOs from the largest electronics companies in Europe, for the concrete and immediate implementation of the strategy (implementation plan).
