The European Artificial Intelligence Board (the "AI Board") is a key advisory body that was created by the AI Act, which took effect on 1 August 2024.

The role of Board in shaping EU AI policy
The AI Board includes representatives from each EU Member State and is supported by the AI Office within the European Commission, which serves as the Board's Secretariat. It is chaired by one of the EU Member States. The Board plays a crucial role in the governance framework set out by the AI Act, ensuring the effective implementation of the AI Act across the European Union. The European Data Protection Supervisor, and EEA-EFTA countries, participate in Board meetings as observers.
The AI Board helps coordinate and ensure cooperation between EU Member States, aiming for consistent implementation and application of the AI Act across the Union. It helps coordinate national competent authorities responsible for enforcing the Regulation, and it collects and shares technical and regulatory expertise, but also best practices. There will be sub-groups that serve as platforms for collaboration for national authorities and subgroups that will focus on AI policy topics.
A key responsibility of the AI Board is to provide advice and assistance with implementing the AI Act, including discussing guidelines, draft delegated and implementing acts. These are essential to make sure that the AI Act’s provisions are easy to understand, implement and enforce.
However, the Board's responsibilities go beyond regulation. It plays a larger and proactive role in shaping AI policy across the EU by giving advice on innovation policy, the international AI partnerships and other strategic AI related matters. This broad scope helps ensure that the EU stays competitive in AI.
Through its work, the European Artificial Intelligence Board supports the development of a coherent and forward-looking AI policy framework, ensuring that AI technologies benefit all European citizens while upholding the highest standards of safety and ethics.
