Our precious cultural heritage can be easily and permanently damaged or even destroyed. Tragedies such as the fire at the Notre Dame cathedral in Paris or the devastating earthquake in L’Aquila are vivid reminders that such threats are hard to prevent or predict, and the damage can happen in an instant. As in so many other areas, digital technologies have opened up new and better ways of preserving our cultural treasures.
