Since 2015, FET project subCULTron has been developing a novel autonomous underwater robot swarm.to collect environmental data in the waterways of Venice.
Venice was chosen as optimal location for the first “out-of-the-lab” and “into-the-real-life” experiments worldwide, because of its complex and challenging underwater world.
The data collected from these swarms of robots will give new insights into the complex interplay of flora, fauna, industry, tourism and ecology in the highly stressed underwater world of the Venice lagoon.
The subCULTron swarm consists of three robot-types (aMussels, aFish, aPads "Lily Pads") which are inspired by different natural organisms and which target specific functionalities. The system is aimed for long-term autonomy, their members can communicate, and can adapt to changing environments autonomously while still obeying commands from human operators.
Journalists are invited to join the scientists, who will be conducting first experiments on September 15th, 2017.
