The objective of this workshop was to explore emerging trends in the interactive technologies and to identify opportunities for impact across industries. It also took into consideration the difficulties met by the European interactive technology community, as well as the legal and ethical aspects of the sector and how to best address them.

On 12 and 13 March 2019, a number of 60 experts from European companies, research centres and universities involved in extended reality, human-machine interactions and immersive technologies met in Brussels at the initiative of the European Commission, DG CONNECT.

Interactive and immersive technologies are gradually moving from hype to reality, creating value across multiple sectors in the economy and society. Applications of virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) are numerous and developing fast. Many areas, ranging from entertainment to medical care, make use of interactive technologies to engage users in immersive experiences.

Identifying Europe’s strengths and weaknesses in the domain is thus essential in order to support the development of these emerging technologies for the benefit of the citizens, in their professional and personal lives.
